(Brazil) Without oxygen, Amazonas asks to transfer 60 premature babies to other states

Brazil Covid

Amazonas warned other states that it needs to transfer at least 60 premature babies . They are hospitalized in Manaus and are also at risk of running out of oxygen. The governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), promised to welcome the babies and made harsh criticisms of President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party).

The request for governors to check whether neonatal hospital beds are available was made this Friday morning (15).

The president of Conass (National Council of Health Secretaries) and health secretary of Maranhão, Carlos Lula confirmed the information to CNN.

According to him, Maranhão will be able to receive five to ten babies. The logistics for making the transfer feasible has not yet been defined. Other states are still checking how many premature babies they could get.

Manaus without oxygen

Since yesterday, the city of Manaus has been without hospital oxygen due to the increased demand caused by the explosion of cases in Covid-19. Gas consumption has at least tripled in the past few days and in the past 24 hours, the city has used the available stock for ten days.

Faced with chaos, the state began to transfer patients from moderate cases from Covid to other states , including Maranhão, Piauí and the Federal District. The first oxygen tanks transported by the FAB started arriving in the Amazon capital this morning.

President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) said on Friday (15) in his social networks that “all means have been made available” to serve the population of Amazonas. Vice President Hamilton Mourão said that it was not possible to predict the crisis because of the new variant of the coronavirus discovered in Manaus.

At the end of the year, the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, tried to decree a lockdown in the city, but backed down after protests. Some Bolsonar parliamentarians celebrated the withdrawal on social networks.
